  • About Florida

    Florida

Florida needs no introduction, the perfect holiday destination drawing millions of visitors from every corner of the world all year round. Famous for its many theme parks, beautiful beaches, stunning wildlife and scenery, restaurants and shopping malls it’s easy to see why Florida is such a popular holiday destination for so many!

Situated on the south east coast of the USA and now with numerous airlines providing direct routes to Orlando airport with a flight time of between 8-9 hours, getting to Florida has never been easier!

Florida is roughly the size of the UK and is dotted with airports. The main ones you will encounter are Orlando International (MCO), Orlando Sanford (SFB), Miami International (MIA) and Tampa International (TPA) depending on which part of Florida you are travelling to.

The Eastern part of Florida (which includes all the major towns and cities such as Orlando, Tampa and Fort Lauderdale) fall in the Eastern Time Zone, which is 5 hours behind Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) and the Western part of the Florida panhandle falls in the Central Time Zone, which is 6 hours behind GMT.

    Driving in Orlando

Driving in Florida can be a real pleasure although traffic around the main Orlando area can become busy at times. The entire Floridian road system is well designed to allow ease of travel. Florida's attractions can all easily be reached by road, with a comprehensive system of highways (some of which are toll roads) covering the entirety of the state. The road system is generally well sign-posted, although it is recommended that you plan out your journey with a good map before setting off

The cost of petrol (gas) in Florida is particularly low compared to the UK. You can make long journeys and be amazed at how little you've spent on petrol.

These simple driving tips may come in handy!

  • Drive on the right!

  • Always carry your license in case you should be stopped

  • On single lane roads if a yellow school bus is stationary with flashing reds lights traffic will stop on both sides of the road until the bus continues its journey

  • Lane discipline in Florida differs to that in the UK. Overtaking can be carried out on both sides, so always pay attention to vehicles nearby on either side and check your mirrors regularly.

  • Speed limits are usually lower than in the UK and should be obeyed, fines are heavy and always enforced Roads (especially in the Orlando area) feature regular traffic light junctions. At junctions, the name of the road you are crossing is displayed on wires hanging overhead (i.e. not the road you are traveling on).

  • You are permitted to make a right turn when the traffic light is red, but only if you have stopped completely to check no oncoming traffic

  • So what else is there to do in Florida?

There’s no denying that most people visit Florida for the theme parks, but there is so much more to Florida than just the attractions

  • Relax on one of the many Floridian beaches

  • With 1,100 miles of beaches, its no wonder Florida has one to suit every visitor. If you fancy catching a wave then the Sebastian Inlet State Park is the one for you. The waves along this three-mile stretch of beach are constant and fast. If any surf is breaking on the East Coast of Florida, it will be at Sebastian Inlet.

If that all sounds a little to energetic for you then why not try the Bahia Honda State Park, with mild, clear water, gently swaying palm trees, sandy white shores and more than one lush and cosy beach to choose from.

Clearwater Beach - Home of pristine white sand beaches, clear Gulf waters, warm sunshine, and plenty of hospitality. Why not try something different and board the Dolphin Encounter? Or even some Deep Sea Fishing?

  • Shop ‘til you drop at one of Florida’s Malls

  • Without a doubt, one of the most satisfying and rewarding things to do in the USA is shopping! Florida has more than its fair share of fantastic premium and outlet malls and knowing what to buy and where to buy it means you can make unbelievable savings on UK shopping prices.

For shopping in Orlando, try Belz Factory Outlets, this amazing outlet mall has all your favourite sports brands and popular designer wear. Florida Mall is the area’s main shopping mall – with a massive choice of shops and it’s only a 10-minute drive from International Drive!

For Shopping in Fort Lauderdale, Sawgrass Mills is definitely worth a visit or two, in this mega-discount mall there are more than 500 shops, so it’s best to pick up a mall guide to target the shops that interest you.

For Shopping in Tampa, if you are staying on the Gulf Coast then this is definitely the best and easiest mall to reach. Offering over 200 stores you are bound to find a bargain or two.

For Shopping in Miami, A short drive from South Beach and you will find Bayside Marketplace, a waterside shopping mall which offers all your favourite brands as well as smaller boutiques selling all sorts of trinkets, jewellery and arts and crafts.
